Making your bed is a task that many of us complete when we wake up to set ourselves up for a productive day.
But it turns out, this could be bad for your health.
Experts as MattressNextDay have debunked nine of the most common mattress and bedding cleaning myths, including why you shouldn’t make your bed first thing – and the reason why is pretty grim.
From how often you should wash your throw pillows to cleaning your mattress protector, the specialists have done all of the digging for you to help you to prolong the life of your mattress, help keep bed bugs at bay and keep you healthy all at the same time.
Read on to find out where else you could be going wrong.
- You don’t need to clean your mattress if it has a mattress cover – FALSE
Although mattress protectors can protect your mattresses from stains, spillages and other substances, they are not immune to dust mites and other allergens.
Therefore, you should clean your mattress – and the cover – every six months.
If it’s easier, you could use the change in the main seasons (summer and winter) as a reminder.
- Mattress toppers don’t need washing as often as your bedding – TRUE
This is true as they only need to be cleaned every few months.
Whilst mattress toppers and protectors are waterproof and can protect your mattress from stains, dust mites and bed bugs, as well as helping to prolong your mattress’ life, they still need to be cleaned to remain effective.
MattressNextDay recommends cleaning them once every three months.
- You should make your bed as soon as you wake up – FALSE
Household dust mites love the warmth of your bed, so in the morning, you should pull back your bed covers for 30 minutes and leave them to air and cool down before making your bed.
As soon as you pull back your covers, open your window to give your room a refreshing breeze.
- Your inner cushion pads don’t need to be washed – FALSE
Whilst you may think that you don’t need to clean items that you don’t physically touch, such as inner cushion pads, this is false.
They soak up all of your sweat, dust and skin, and should, therefore, be washed at least three times a year.
- Washing your bedding at 30 degrees is sufficient enough – FALSE
To kill germs, sweat, dust and other nasties, you should be washing your bedding at 60 degrees.
Whilst it may be tempting to pop them on a colder cycle, this may not kill all of the bacteria or remove sweat as effectively.
Remember to add a dash of detergent to keep your sheets extra soft.
- You should wash your bedding once a week – TRUE
For optimum cleanliness, you should wash your sheets once a week.
If you are unable to do this, there are some quick tricks that can help you keep your sheets feeling fresh, such as not allowing pets on your bed, or using skincare and body care products at least 30 minutes before you sleep.
- Your pillowcases should be changed the same number of time as your duvet cover – FALSE
Dirt, sweat and also the products you are putting on your skin before bed can build up on your pillowcase.
So you should look to clean them more often than your duvet cover – twice a week should do the job.
- Your pyjamas are fine to wash every couple of days – TRUE
This, of course, depends on how much you are wearing your pyjamas.
If you change straight out of your pyjamas in the morning and they are your second layer, you don’t need to wash them every day.
However, if they are your only layer and you wear them for a long period of time – such as to work from home in the morning – it’s best to treat them as garments that should be washed daily.

- Sleeping in your underwear is hygienic – TRUE
It’s safe to wear underwear to bed, however, the NHS recommends that you wash your underwear at 60 degrees to prevent germs from spreading.
Used pants can contain microbes that can cause urinary tract infections, thrush and more.
